Utility Scale (US)/ Renewable Project Manager

Immediate W2 contract position available in Atlanta, GA (Hybrid: 4 office, 1 remote).
Estimated Duration: 16 months

Job Summary:

• The Utility Scale (US) Project Manager (PM) is responsible for the development, evaluation, procurement, and management of renewable energy resources, including Utility Scale Request for Proposals (RFPs), Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), and Qualifying Facility (QF) projects.
• This position serves as a subject matter expert related to project risk evaluation, contractual terms and conditions, renewable and energy storage applications, interconnection processes, and project execution.
• The Utility-Scale Team currently has a hybrid work schedule and works in the office (241 Ralph McGill) weekly, Monday through Thursday.
• The Project Manager position requires 10+ years of related experience and an accredited bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree is a plus.
• Project Management Professional certification is a plus.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

• Act as the project manager and primary point of contact for Utility Scale renewable procurement programs and QF projects.
• This position works with large and diverse teams across Southern Company and external stakeholders to successfully develop, execute, and administer renewable energy projects
• Manage renewable energy projects and contracts from evaluation and procurement through commercial operation.
• Lead evaluation, development, negotiation, implementation, and management of Utility Scale PPAs and QF agreements.
• Oversee QF project intake, evaluation, interconnection coordination, milestone tracking, and commercial operation readiness.
• Provide regulatory support for PPA certification activities, QF program implementation, and IRP development.
• Support after-hours storm restoration efforts as needed
• Leading the planning, execution, and closure of electric utility projects, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget.
• Collaborating with clients, engineers, field teams, and stakeholders to define project objectives and requirements.
• Developing comprehensive project plans, including scope, schedule, budget, quality, and risk management.
• Establishing and managing project budgets, including cost estimation, tracking, and reporting.
• Allocating and managing project resources effectively, including personnel, equipment, and materials.
• Monitoring project progress, identifying deviations, and implementing corrective actions as needed to ensure project goals are met.
• Leading project kick-off meetings, regular progress meetings, and close-out meetings with all relevant stakeholders.
• Managing and mitigating project risks, including technical, schedule, and budget risks.
• Ensuring project compliance with electrical codes, standards, safety regulations, and industry best practices.
• Overseeing the development and review of project documentation, such as drawings, specifications, and reports.
• Coordinating with procurement teams to source materials and equipment.
• Ensuring timely delivery to meet project timelines.
• Leading commissioning and testing activities.
• Ensuring systems are operational and meet project requirements.
• Providing technical expertise to address engineering and design issues that may arise during project execution.
• Tracking project performance and provide regular progress reports to clients and senior management.
• Maintaining accurate project records and documentation, including project files and change orders.
• Fostering a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement within the project team.
• Mentoring and providing guidance to project team members and junior project managers.

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, Energy Policy, Finance, or other technical/business area preferred.
• Additional consideration for master’s degree and/or certifications (PE, CEM, PMP, etc.).

Skillsets and expertise (required):

• Experience as a Project Manager in the electric utility industry.
• Strong knowledge of electrical systems, utility infrastructure, and project management principles.
• Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification is advantageous.
• Proficiency in project management software and tools, such as Microsoft Project or Primavera.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure.
• Exceptional leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.
• Strong negotiation and conflict resolution abilities.
• Familiarity with industry-specific regulations and permitting processes.
• Experience managing cross-functional teams and complex projects.
• Ability to build effective relationships with plant staff, design engineering staff and/or vendors.

Experience:

• Prior experience in energy policy, renewables, project management, system planning, energy procurement, and/or utility operations preferred.
• Experience with QF project development, evaluation, contract administration, interconnection processes, regulatory compliance, or portfolio management preferred.
• Working knowledge of PURPA, QF regulations, avoided-cost procurement programs, and renewable energy contracting processes is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge of renewable procurement, Interconnection Agreements, PPAs and QF program requirements.
• Understanding of the QF project lifecycle including evaluation, interconnection, contracting, commercial operation, and compliance obligations.
• Ability to evaluate project risks, contractual terms, commercial milestones, and regulatory requirements associated with Utility Scale and QF projects.
