Immediate W2 contract position available in Birmingham, AL.
Estimated Duration: 10 Months

  • The Mechanical Engineer SR 1 position requires 5+ years of related experience and an accredited bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
  • A professional engineer license is desired.
  • Job responsibilities include mechanical engineering support activities to develop design inputs, validate scoping documents for system evaluations and perform engineering review of work products demonstrating feasibility for power uprate on existing nuclear power plants. This role will lead in equipment specifications, and hydraulic calculations, developing datasheets for valves and other equipment, providing technical direction to designers, developing design input requirements and reviewing results from engineering reports assessing the feasibility of uprate activities and the modifications necessary for the plant.
  • This role requires making sound decisions from judgement with minimal information.
  • Skillsets and expertise required for this position include significant experience with design of new construction and/or retrofit of power generation or heavy industrial facilities and the ability to take the lead role for detailed design activities, significant knowledge of mechanical engineering design principles, proficiency with applicable codes, standards and regulatory requirements, experience in development, preparation and checking of P&IDs, experience with overall design and layout of piping systems, pipe sizing and routing, material selection, pipe support design, equipment selection, preparation of inquiry packages/data sheets, and specification of tanks, pumps, and balance of plant equipment, experience with hydraulic calculations.
  • FATHOM, PEPSE (or similar software) experience is preferred.
  • The ability to build effective relationships with plant staff, design engineering staff and/or vendors is essential.
Job Description / Desired Qualifications:
Required Experience
  • 5+ years of commercial nuclear power plant experience.
  • Strong understanding of nuclear plant systems, operations, engineering, or licensing processes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary environment supporting EPU-related activities.
Preferred Experience:
  • The ideal candidate would possess several of the following qualifications:
  • Fleet Experience
  • Previous experience supporting operations, engineering, design, licensing, or modifications.
  • Previous experience supporting operations, engineering, design, licensing or modifications.
  • Familiarity with plant systems, procedures, and configuration management processes in the company fleet.
Operations Background:
  • Prior experience in nuclear plant operations, including system operation, troubleshooting, procedure use, and plant response.
  • Ability to evaluate engineering changes from an operational perspective.
Engineering Design / Systems Engineering:
  • Experience preparing or reviewing engineering analyses, calculations, design changes, design input documents, or technical reports.
  • Strong systems engineering background with knowledge of plant system interactions and performance.
  • Experience with power uprate projects particularly in Engineering and Design Basis.
Licensing Experience:
  • Experience supporting nuclear licensing activities, regulatory evaluations, or NRC submittals.
  • Understanding of licensing impacts associated with plant modifications and power uprate projects.
Alternative Candidate Profile:
  • If Nuclear experience is not available, candidates with the following background would also be highly desirable:
  • Experience at another Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) or Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) facility.
  • Direct involvement in a Power Uprate (EPU or other uprate project) at a commercial nuclear plant.
  • Demonstrated understanding of engineering, operations, or licensing considerations associated with power uprate implementation.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Engineering degree is needed (not necessarily mechanical).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical discipline preferred.
  • 5 years of commercial nuclear industry experience.
  • Familiarity with nuclear plant systems, design processes, operations, or licensing.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
