Job Description/Desired Qualifications:
The Protection & Control Applications Engineer 1 position requires 0-5 years of related experience and an accredited bachelor’s degree in engineering.
An Engineer 1 learns technical concepts and company philosophy under close guidance from others.
Focus is primarily on individual projects.
Persons in this role must be able to apply basic engineering principles, specifications, policies, and procedures.
The primary responsibility of this position will be to support the protective relay settings development of distribution feeder breakers within transmission substations.
Due to the considerable capital investment of our distribution system, our team is in need of a dedicated engineering resource to handle the growing list of relay settings change requests.
To be more specific about the work, tasks of this role will include, but not be limited to:
Verifying/updating distribution substation short circuit models in CAPE.
Populating calculation sheets to solicit feedback from company’s Distribution engineering team.
Performing time overcurrent coordination studies of distribution substation power transformers and breakers.
Reviewing distribution substation protective relay logic and control drawings.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology is preferred
Electrical emphasis/discipline is highly preferred
Experience:
Experience performing protective relay calculations and coordination studies is a plus
Experience working with CAPE (Computer Aided Protection Engineering), CYME, ASPEN, EDSA, ETAP or other related power system simulation software programs is a plus
Substation protective relay testing experience along with control scheme testing and commissioning experience is a plus
Experience in transmission and/or distribution substation operations, distribution engineering, field services engineering, and/or substation control design engineering is a plus
For less experienced engineers, electrical engineering courses that will be helpful in this position will include Power System Analysis, Protective Relaying, Control Systems, Electric Machine Theory, and Symmetrical Components
Job responsibilities include:
Applying standard philosophies and settings to distribution substation capital projects.
Applying requested settings changes from Distribution Reliability work groups.
Reviewing distribution substation prints and protection schemes for dependability, reliability, and security, including protection zones and P&C equipment applications.
Completing power system modeling and fault studies for requests, customer support, and capital projects.
Managing relay asset information in CAPE and STOMP repositories.
Completing deliverables that comply with applicable NERC, SERC, and other industry standards.
Skillsets and expertise (required):
Introductory engineering knowledge
Basic problem-solving skills
Limited discretion making independent decisions based on procedure and review with supervisor
Basic understanding of business unit software including CAPE, STOMP, and Vault
Strong work ethic, positive attitude
Ability to build effective relationships with field staff, design engineering staff and/or vendors.
